Abstract

PURPOSE: To compare the preventing effect on posterior capsule opacification seen with foldable acrylic (AcrySof) and thermomecha nic-thermoplastic and prefolded small incision lenses (Memory lens) implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After cataract surgery with phacoemulsification technique acrylic IOL (AcrySof ) implantations was performed in 36 eyes of 245 cases and hydrogel lens (Memory lens) implantation was performed in 183 eyes of 105 cases. Posterior capsular polishing was not performed in cases with acrylic lens implantation. The cases who had posterior capsular opacification and posterior capsulotomy during surgery were excluded from the study. Mean follow-up period of the cases were 11.2 months (7-36 months). RESULTS: Posterior capsular opacification with different densities were detected in 27 of 245 cases (11%) with acrylic lenses and 18 of 105 cases (17.1%) with hydrogel lenses. There was no statistically significant difference between two groups (Student t test, p> 0.01). YAG Laser capsulotomy was performed in 3 of 27 (11.1%) cases with acrylic lens group and 3 of 18 (16.6%) cases with hydrogel lens group. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference between acrylic and hydrogel lens implantation in terms of prevention of posterior capsular opacification. Even though, during surgery posterior capsular polishing was performed in hydrogel lens group but not in acrylic lens group, density of posterior capsular opacification that needed YAG laser capsulotomy was lower in acrylic group.
