Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the effects of 0.5% apraclonidine and combinations of 0.5% apraclonidine with beta-blockers (selective and nonselective) on the retinal vessels diameters. Materials and Methods: The patients who received apraclonidine or combinations of apraclonidine with beta-blockers (nonselective and selective) were divided into three groups. All groups consisted of 20 eyes of 10 patients and group 1 was only treated with 0.5% apraclonidine. The patients in group 2 received a combination of 0.5% apraclonidine and 0.5% betaxolol hydrocloride apraclonidine and the patients in group 3 were treated with a combination of 0.5% aproclonidine and 0.5% timolol maleate. In all patients, the diameters of retinal vessels were measured with Topcon IMAGInet TRCIA before and one week, one month and three months after treatment. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in mean age between the groups (P>0.05). Mean IOPs at three months after treatment were 17.2±1.3 mmHg in group 1, 15.9±2.6 mmHg in group 2 and 16.0±1.5 mmHg in group 3, and it was statistically significant when compared with pretreatment values. There was no significant difference in diameters of retinal vessel at the levels of optic disc margin, first and second branchings before and one week, one month and three months after administration of drugs (P>0.05). Conclusion: Topical application of apraclonidine and apraclonidine combined with beta-blockers lower the intraocular pressure effectively, but do not affect the diameters of retinal vessels.
