Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the applicability of the VF-14 (Visual Function-14) test in our society and to determine the subjective opinions of cataract patients about the surgical outcome. Material and Methods: This study consisted of 104 patients of 50 years or older who had first-eye phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. Data were collected by assessing VF-14 scores preoperatively and at a 4- month postoperative follow- up visit. Respond ratios of each test item was determined. Besides, the patients were asked to rate their opinion about the surgical outcome. Results: When we compared pre- operative and post-operative VF-14 scores, we determined that post- operative scores were higher for all test items. This difference was statistically significant (paired t- test, p<0.0001). Three test items were responded by all patients, two items related to driving were responded by only 25% of the patients. Ninety percent of the patients stated that their quality of life was improved post- operatively. Seventy- six percent of the patients determined that the surgical outcome was better than expected. Conclusion: Considering the first results of VF-14 test in our country, we could state that this test is valid and reliable for evaluating the subjective outcome of cataract surgery and for obtaining more detailed information about the expectations of the patients.
