Sonuç: Her iki ilaç konjonktivada hafif sitolojik değişikliklere neden olmaktadır. Bunun nedeni ilaçların kısa süreli kullanımı olabilir.
Abstract
Purpose: To detect the effects of topical brimonidine tartrate 0.2% and metipranolol 0.3% on the conjunctival impression cytology. Material and Method: This study consisted of 16 patients treated with brimonidine tartrate %0.2 (Group 1), 16 patients treated with metipranolol %0.3 (group 2), and 20 healthy controls (Group 3). All eyes underwent complete ophthalmologic evaluation. Conjunctival cytologic samples were taken from temporal interpalpebral conjunctiva and inferior nasal conjunctiva pretreatment and 3 months after treatment. The specimens vere classified according to the technic described by Nelson. The specimens were obtained from both eyes of all subjects, but only one eye was randomly chosen. Results: In group 1, for inferior nasal and temporal conjunctiva, 4 of eyes were grade O, 11 grade 1, and 1 grade 2 before treatment and 14 eyes had grade 1 and 2 eyes had grade 3 after treatment (p<0.05). In group 2, the cytologie evaluation of inferior nasal conjunctiva demonstrated grade O in 9 eyes, grade 1 in 4 eyes, and grade 2 in 3 eyes before treatment, and after treatment 4 eyes had grade O, 8 eyes had grade 1, and 4 eyes had grade 2 (p<0.05). In group 2, there were statistically significant differences between pretreatment and posttreatment cytologie examinations of temporal conjunctiva (p<0.05). In group 3, 7 eyes (35%) demonstrated grade O, 11 eyes grade 1(55%), and 2 eyes(10%) grade 2 cytology for temporal bulbar conjunctiva and and cytologie evaluation showed grade O in 6 eyes (%30), grade 1 in 10 'eyes (%50), grade 2 in 3 eyes(%15), and grade 3 in 1 eye (%5) for inferior- nasal conjunctiva. Conclusion: Both'drugs cause mild cytological changes in conjunctiva. This may be due to short term usage of the drugs.
