Abstract
PURPOSE: The cause of Behçet's disease (BD) is unknown, bacterial and viral pathogens are thought to play a triggering role in BD. The purpose of this study is to determine the possible relationship of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) positivity and BD with or without ocular involvement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sera of 20 ( 36.3%) patients with ocular BD, 10 (18.1%) patients with inactive ocular BD and 25(45.4%) patients without ocular involvement were investigated for anti-HCV antibody and HCV-RNA by enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS: Only one patient with non-ocular BD was positive for anti-HCV antibody, but negative for HCV-RNA. Fifty-four patients and 50 controls were negative for HCV-RNA and anti-HCV antibody. CONCLUSION: We did not find an increased prevalence of HCV infection in our patients with BD. Our results suggest that there is no etiopathogenic role of HCV infection in BD with or without ocular involvement.
