Abstract

Aim: To determine the diurnal variation of lower tear meniscus (LTM) parameters with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in dry eye patients and normal subjetcs. Material and Method: Fifteen eyes of 15 dry-eye patients (group 1), and 15 eyes of 15 healthy individuals (group 2) were enrolled in this study. LTM height (LTMH), depth (LTMD), area (LTMA), and angle (α-angle) were measured with anterior segment OCT at 8:00 am, 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm in both groups. The results were compared statistically and evaluated for significance and reliability. Results: The mean age of group 1 was 43.25±8.90 (37-53) years and that of group 2 was 42.41±6.76 (32-56) years. A statistically significant decrease in the mean LTMH, LTMD, LTMA and α-angle values during the day period in both groups (p<0.05). All of the LTM parameters were found to be the highest at 8:00 am and least at 6:00 pm in both groups. When compared the LTM parameters at the same time period they were less in group 1 according to group 2 but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Significant diurnal variation of LTM parameters were observed in patients with dry eye and healthy individuals by using OCT and it was thought that to evaluate the dynamics of the tear system, OCT can provide useful information.
