Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the anterior segment parameters by combined Scheimpflug-Placido topography system in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and to define their relation with disease severity. Material and Method: In this study, 44 eyes of 44 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, who had not been treated before, recently diagnosed with polysomnography and 78 eyes of 39 healthy subjects were compared. Additionally, the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group was divided into two subgroups based on the AHI values as follows: 22 patients with mild/moderate (4-<=30) and 22 patients with severe (>30). Sirius topography system was used to evaluate horizontal visible iris diameter, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, anterior chamber volume, iridocorneal angel, corneal volume, horizontal anterior chamber diameter and simulated keratometry readings (Sim K1, Sim K2) parameters. Results: Statistically significant differences in topographic parameters was not found between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients and normal population ( Student's t-test, p >0.05). Central corneal thickness and corneal volume were 527.44±37.28 µm and 56.61±4.15 mm3 in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and 537.83±29.37 µm and 57,20 ± 3.45 mm3 in the controls, respectively (p=0.05 and p=0.33). Anterior chamber depth and anterior chamber volume were 2.76±0.44 mm and 143.60±37.30 mm3 in the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group, and 2.86±0.44 mm and 146.68 ± 41.49 mm3 in the control group, respectively (p=0.23 and p=0.74). In addition, there was no difference in topographic parameters between the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: No significant differences were found between patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and healthy individuals regarding the anterior segment topographic parameters and also no significant differences in the relation with the disease severity.
