Abstract
To evaluate the complications of phacoemulsification surgery during the first 5 years after residency training. Material and Method: A total of 1116 patients of 1284 eyes who underwent phacoemulsification surgery by the same surgeon between January 2010 and January 2015 was evaluated retrospectively. The first 642 operated eyes formed Group 1, the second 642 operated eyes formed Group 2. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were compared. Independent t-test was used as statistical method. P<0.05 values was considered significant. Results: One posterior capsule rupture, 3 iris damage, 10 Descemet's detachment, 6 aphakia, 8 phaco burn, 3 anterior capsular tear were observed in Group 1 during operation. Forty five transient corneal edema, 38 transient intraocular pressure elevation, 4 capsular phimosis, 7 pupil irregularity, 2 intraocular lens decentralization, 1 endophthalmitis, 2 wound leakage were observed in Group 1 in the postoperative period. Posterior capsule rupture was not observed in Group 2; and 2 iris damage, 5 afakia, 8 Descemet's detachment, 7 phaco burn, 2 anterior capsular tear were observed in Group 2 during operation. 30 transient corneal edema, 34 transient intraocular pressure elevation, 3 capsular phimosis, 6 pupil irregularity, 1 intraocular lens decentralization, 1 bullous keratopathy, 1 wound leakage were observed in Group 2 in the postoperative period. There were no significant difference between the two groups in terms of these complications. The total number of complications was significantly greater in Group 1 (n=130) than Group 2 (n=100) (p=0.029). Conclusion: The total complications of phacoemulsification surgery occur more frequently in early post residency training period
