Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of short and long-term of smoking to choroidal thickness by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Material and Method: Fifteen short-term (<2 years) smoking participants (group 1) and 15 long-term (>10 years) smoking participants (group 2) were included in this prospective study. Detailed ophthalmic examination, refraction error and axiel length measurements were performed. Choroidal thickness was measured vertically from fovea center and 1.500 ?m and 3.000 ?m temporal and nasal regions of fovea by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. All measurements were performed in the morning. Results: Group 1 included 9 male and 6 female participants with an age between 30 and 48 (average 43.60±11.65) years and group 2 included 8 male and 7 female participants with an age between 31 and 50 (average 45.02±11.69) years. The mean smoking periods of the groups were 1.63±0.6 years and 12.2±4 years, respectively. Mean choroidal thickness of group 1 was 272.6±52.5 ?m and group 2 was 269.6±57.4 ?m. No statistically significant difference were seen in the choroidal thickness values between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: Long-term smoking was not associated with significant change with regards to choroidal thickness by evaluating spectral domain optical coherence tomography.
