Abstract

Autologous (from the other eye) or allogenic (living related or cadaver) limbal stem cell transplantation is the only treatmentmodality of limbal stem cell deficiency, except palliative medical therapy. Long term immunosuppressive treatment due tohigh risk of rejection is the most important disadvantage of the allograft limbal stem cell transplantation. Despite being expensive, cultured limbal stem cell transplantation is the preferred method due to lower risk and it can be repeated when necessary. The success rates of the limbal stem cell transplantations are reported to be around 70%. If limbal stem cells are notobtained from the other eye, other stem cell sources such as oral mucosa can be used.
