Özet
Hristiyan inancında kötülüğün kaynağı kabul edilen Şeytan, Yeni Ahit’te vaftizinin ardından kırk gün çöle çekilen İsa’yı sınayan bir karakter olarak belirmektedir. “Ayartıcı” kimliğiyle İsa’yı üç sınama ile kendisine tapınmaya ikna için çabalayan ancak İsa tarafından yenilgiye uğratılan Şeytan, kötülük bağlamında dünya üzerindeki etkisi nedeniyle ontolojik açıdan erken dönemden itibaren dinsel literatürde başlıca tartışma konularından biri hâline gelmiştir. Öte yandan Kutsal Kitap anlatılarında rol oynadığı konulara bağlı olarak da cisimleşmiş hâlinin temsili, Hristiyan ikonografisinin yanıt aradığı bir sorunsal olmuştur. Şeytan’ın Batı sanatındaki imgeleşme süreci, dinsel literatürün yanı sıra Hristiyanlığın ve Batı kültürünün kötülük olgusuna ilişkin kalıp-yargılarıyla doğrudan bağlantılıdır. Hristiyan ikonografisinde özellikle cehennem tasarımının oluşturulmasında başrolü oynayan Şeytan figürü, bu çalışmada “İsa’nın Sınanması” sahneleri bağlamında ele alınmakta ve Orta Çağ’dan Rönesans’a uzanan süreçte Şeytan’ın resim sanatındaki değişen imgesi, kötülüğün temsili ve ikonografik kalıplar çerçevesinde değerlendirilmektedir.
Abstract
Considered to be the source of evil in Christian belief, the Devil is depicted as a character that tried to tempt Christ who, after being baptised, went to the desert for forty days according to the New Testament. As the tempter, the Devil tried to tempt Christ three times to make Him worship him but was rebuffed each time. Because of its evil effects on the world, the Devil has been one of the main discussion topics in religious literature in ontological terms since the early periods. On the other hand, the representation of the Devil’s incarnation depending on the role it plays in the Biblical narratives has been a problematic that Christian iconography searches an answer for. The process of the Devil’s portraiture in Western art is directly related to the stereotypes of evil in religious literature as well as in Christian and Western culture. The Devil figure which plays a major role in especially the formation of a hell imagination in Christian iconography is discussed in relation to the temptation of Christ scenes in this study. Moreover, the changing image of the Devil in the art of painting from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance is evaluated within the frame of the representation of evil and iconographical patterns.
