Abstract

As an architectural element, a Gargoyle is a spout designed to convey water from a roof so that the rainwater flows through a trough which is cut in the back of the Gargoyle and exits from its open mouth. Gargoyles are usually depicted as fantastical beings, dragons, combinations of real animals and people. In the medieval age, Gargoyles were not only used as spouts for rainwater but were also preferred for religious reasons. Sometimes being the symbol of evil or sometimes being the symbol of banishing the evil from sacred places, Gargoyles were located on catedral facades such as Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Whether functional or symbolic, the Gargoyles of Notre Dame de Paris and the other cathedrals enriched the facades as being the artworks of endless imagination.
