Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of 4 different chemical surface treatments on the bond strength of a composite resin to glass and quartz fiber post surfaces. Material and Methods: Thirty two specimens from each posts systems, total 64 post slices (3 mm height x 2mm diameter) were prepared. Specimens were mounted into acrylic blocks. The specimens were divided into 4 subgroups (n=8) to apply surface treatments. In control group 60 s silane coupling agent, in other groups methylene chloride for 5 s, methylene chloride for 30 s and 24% hydrogene peroxide for 20 min were applied. A composite resin (Tetric EvoCeram) was placed to specimens surfaces. Shear bond strength (MPa) were measured using a universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test (a=0.05). The effect of the chemical surface treatments on glass and quartz fiber post surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Surface treatments and type of fiber post affected the bond strength of composite resin (P<0.001). The highest bond strength values were obtained on glass fiber post surfaces with the application of hydrogen peroxide (P<0.001). No significant differences were found between the application of methylene chloride and silane coupling agent on quartz fiber post surfaces. Conclusions: Application of hydrogene peroxide and methylene chloride for 30 s affected bond strength of fiber post by dissolving epoxy resin matrix. The application of methylene , chloride for 5 s was not found to be effective for increasing bond strength.
