Abstract

Procession is a form of public ceremony that uses the urban landscape as the site of its performance, and transforms it temporarily as well as permanently. Perhaps, because of this aspect, processions are not the most popular form of public ceremony in today's cities. Yet, processions were frequently performed in the Roman cities for various reasons such as for religious festivals, coronations, funerals and triumphs. Roman triumphal processions could have only be performed in capital cities. They, therefore, had a significant influence on the development of the urban layouts of both Rome and Constantinople. The triumphal procession in Rome started at the Campus Martius, made a loop around the Palatine Hill passing through the Forum Boarium and Circus Maximus, and ended at the Temple of Jupiter. This route not only attracted the construction of triumphal mouments like triumphal arches, but also buildings that would facilitate comfortable viewing conditions like porticoes, theaters and hippodromes. Temple of Jupiter ceased to be the focus of triumphal processions in Rome after Constantine the Great. As Christianity became the religion of the state, Forum Romanum became the new focus of the ceremony. This shift from a religious building to a public space was furthered in Cosntantinople where the ritual emphasis was put on the imperial fora located on the south arm of the Mese. In fact, development of the urban structure of Constantinople till the mid-Vth century is closely bound with the definition of this arm as the triumphal route. In the mid-Vth century triumphal procession lost its significance, since the emperors no longer lead the armies to the campaigns. As a result, the southern arm of the Mese lost its significance, and the eastern tip of the city with the ceremonies in the hippodrome became the focus of the ritual. Justinian further developed this aspect when he rebuilt the Augusteion as his forum, and embellished it with triumphal connotations.
