Abstract
The Champlevé technique is a decoration technique which is made by engraving the perimeter of the motif in a non-deep manner and by filling a colored paste into the engraved area. Champlevé technique is also defined as when only the motif is made with the technique of scraping and colored paste fills in so that the motif is highlighted. The using of colored paste in the decoration results in the emerging of a multicolored composition. There are only few examples from the Late Antiquity, whilst examples of the Middle Byzantine Period are known from the Phrygian Region. In this study, slabs from the Side Museum decorated in champlevé technique are examined. All date to Late Antiquity. Cyprus is the region that has the most intense group of champlevé findings in the Late Antiquity and therefore this region is considered as a place of production. The composition and style seen in the samples of Side show very similar features with the examples of Cyprus. Because of the geographical proximity of Cyprus with Side, some examples are thought to be imported from Cyprus.
