Abstract
The study aimed at examining the correlation among physical activity, quality of sleep and depression among the university students. 300 students (176 female students, 124 male students) who studied at the Afyon Kocatepe University were included in the study. To the participant students; a personal information form for demographic variables, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form (IPAQshort), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were administered. It was found out that there was a negative correlation between total sleep quality and physical activity (t=-0.237; p< 0.001); a positive correlation between total sleep quality and depression (t= 0.412; p< 0.001); a negative correlation between physical activity and depression (t=-0.358; p< 0.001). Besides; doing sports actively, gender and education types (regular education and evening education) yielded statistically significant differences in IPAQ-short, BDI and PSQI mean scores (p< 0.01). In addition; it was noted that there was a statistically significant difference between total sleep quality and mean depression scores in terms of smoking (p< 0.05). Besides; there was also a statistically significant difference between total sleep quality in terms of alcohol drinking (p< 0.05) while there was no difference between mean physical activity scores and depression scores (p> 0.05). As a conclusion; it was seen that physical activity levels of the university students were moderately active, their quality of sleep was poor and they did not have depression.
