Abstract
We performed a retrospective analyses of the 229 patients who had thyroidectomy between July 1998 and July 2000 to find out which procedure was the saffest for each indication f or operation in diseases of the thyroid gland in the First Surgical Clinic of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital. Incidence of complications, postoperative hypocalcemia and injuries to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) was investigated. The incidence of temporary RLN injury and temporary hypocalcemia were calculated as 3.05, 4.37 percent respectively. In subtotal procedures the rates were lower compared with after total resections. Permanent RLN lesion and permanent hypocalcemia were not found. As a result total thyroidectomies are more likely to be done for malignant disease. But subtotal procedures can be done with comparable low morbidity.
