Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate what advantages the developments in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have given to geography students in Turkey in terms of finding a job and what knowledge and skills should be gained by geography students in order to utilize these advantages. The municipalities among public institutions and 20 GIS companies within private sector constituted the sample groups of the study. Two different questionnaires have been conducted on municipalities and GIS companies. The study revealed that there is at least one GIS department at the investigated municipalities in 21 of 81 provinces in Turkey. The number of employees working at these departments is 214. The study also revealed that there are 769 employees at 13 GIS companies that accepted to answer the questionnaire. It was seen from the study that the developments in the field of GIS in Turkey present great opportunities for Geography graduates to find a job. However, the study has also indicated that Geography graduates are not utilizing these advantages in Turkey. There is only one geographer (0,5 %) among 214 employees at the GIS departments of the municipalities. The number of geographers at 11 GIS companies where 717 people are employed is only seven (1 %). The study revealed that Geography graduates have to gain enough knowledge and skills in Computer and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS and Remote Sensing) and enough competency in English in order to be employed within not only those institutions investigated in this study but also in other public and private sectors that offer much more broader range of services.
