Abstract
Preventatiorı of postoperative nausea and vomiting is an important aspect of anesthesia. Present study prospectively examined the incidence of nausea and vomitting for each day of menstrual cycle. 43 female patients (ASA I - II) undergoing elective abdominal surgery were studied. Patients were catagortzed by day of menstrual cycle in three groups: preovulatory (1-11 days); periovulatory (12-16 days) and postovulatory (17-25 days). Before induction of anesthesia, patients were taken blood samples for detecting their hormonal status and its appropriateness with the phase of menstrual cycle. The overall incidence of postoperative nausea and / or vomiting was 34.9%. Two of those in the preovulatory (20%), four In the periovulatory (22.2%) and nine in the postovulatory (60%) phase of the menstrual cycle had postoperative nausea or vomiting. Patients in the postovulatory phase were statistically signifi¬cantly different than those In the other groups (p< 0.05).
