Abstract
Trauma and stress can cause acute gastric erosions. Acute erosive gastritis can cause morbidity and mortality. There have been several report about the relation between, trauma-stress, gastric erosions and nonthyroidal illhess syndrome. In this study, we created a rat stress model and observed the relationship between the gastic erosions and the effect of thyroid hormones. These were the questions which we tried to find the answers 1-Are thyroid hormones effective in preventing gastric erosions when they are given before stress induction? 2-Can they protect the gastric mucosa, when they are given during the stress? 3-Is there any difference between the protective effects of T3 and T4 on the gastric mucosa? In this study we showed that, thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) can prevent gastic mucosal erosions, when given before and during the stress. T3 and T4 are both equally effective and this shows us that the conversion of T4 to T3 is not influenced in this rat stress model. It is not possible to explain the mechanism of prevention of gastic mucosal erosions. Butit is clear that this mechanism in not related with the gastic pll. In literature there is some evidence that excessive thyroid relasing hormone (TRH) cause gastric ulcération and thyroid hormones suppress TRH This topic needs further investigations.
