Abstract
It is well known that infectious diseases are more frequent in diabetics than normal population. One of the main reasons of this fact is the defect of immune system. This defect might be in any level of the system, as well as in the phagocytic function of PMN leukocytes. In this study we compared phagocytic index(PI) of 30 diabetics with that of 10 normal persons, and we have found that PI in diabetics are obviously lower than that found in non diabetics(p<0.001). • Since the low PI might be due to either metabolic changes of PMN or changes in opsonic activity of the serum(SOA), we wanted to know if there is any change in the SOA of diabetics. For this, we have compared the SOA of 30 diabetics and 30 normal persons, and found that SOA in diabetics is lower than that of normal persons(p<0.001).
