Abstract
PURPOSE: It is a known fact that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) exposure cause increase in free radical production. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether the ambient air pressure have any role on a probable increased oxidative stress caused by HBO2. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 40 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into 5 equal groups; (A) - control, (B and D) - groups exposed to HBO2 or room air at 3 ATA for 2 hours oncely, and (C and E) - another two group which got HBO2 or room air at 2 ATA for 90 minute long 10 seances (two seances/day). After the exposing procedure lipid peroxidation (TBARS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity was measured in rats lung. RESULTS: If compared with controls, CAT activity was found to be increased significantly in both, HBO2 and also room air exposed groups for one seance (p<0,05). SOD activity incresed only in the chronic HBO2 group (p<0.05 when compared with controls). One seance HBO2 enhanced lipid peroxidation products significantly. This increase found also to be significant if compared with one seance room air and chronic HBO2 groups (p<0.05). Hyperbarik room air groups showed no significant changes in lipid peroxidation, when compared with control animals (p>0.05) CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the ambient air pressure have no meaningful effect on oxidative stress, which seems to be caused by HBO2 exposure.
