Abstract
Objective: Enteric fever is produced by Salmonella (S) typhi, S. paratyphi A, B and C. Typhoid fever is a systemic infectious disease caused by S. typhi. This eight-year study was carried out to evaluate the clinical and laboratory properties of typhoid fever and the density in children. Material and Method: This was a retrospective study of 31 confirmed cases. The laboratory diagnosis of typhoid fever was dependent upon either the isolation of S. typhi from a clinical sample or the detection of raised titers of agglutinating serum antibodies against the lipopolysaccharide or flagellum antigens of serotype typhi (the Widal test). The most common complaints were fever (32%), and headache (23%). The most common clinical finding was splenomegaly (19%). Result: Culture was positive in 26% of the cases with a final clinical diagnosis of typhoid fever. Anemia was present in 13%, leukopenia in 32%, neutropenia in 16%, and trombocytopenia in 26% in of the cases. Conclusion: The clinical and laboratory properties of typhoid fever in children were determined.
