Abstract

In the construction process, building materials are the struc- tural and constructive elements which make it possible for hu- mans to realise one of their most vital survival needs; shelter. This study reviews the process of how construction products are obtained and used, looks at how these processes impact on nature and environment, and reviews the need for a con- trol mechanism in order to minimise those impacts.
In obtain- ing construction products from nature, either organically or inorganically, the damage caused to the environment, en- ergy used in the production process and pollution by waste products are major ongoing environmental-ecological and le- gal problems that need to be resolved. In order to do so, the systems approach is used to analyse building production and develop a model on how to inspect and test construction prod- ucts in line with environmental-ecological and legal obliga- tions. The proposed model takes as an example the existing ER (Evaluation Report) system on the systematic properties of the construction product and the standards it complies with, and explains how the products could be tested to comply with the environmental-ecological and legal obligations. Construction product ise analysed in accordance with the proposed model, evaluated and the results reported.
