Abstract
In this study, hernia umbilicalis, urachal fistula, omphalophlebitis and omphaloarteritis were investigated in 18 bull calves. Following sedation with Xylazine HCI the umbilical region was prepared for operation-and Lidocain HCI was used for local infiltration anaesthesia on the incision line. Semicircle like incision was performed on the cranial part of the umbilicus. Following blunt dissection of the abdominal muscles, the abdominal cavity was reached. After treating the lesions the abdominal muscles were stitched with silk by employing horizontal Mattress or Halsted suture techniques. Subcutaneous tissues were stitched with chrome catgut using the simple suture technique and the skin was closed with polyglactin-910 using continuous intradermal suture technique. Parenteral antibiotics were given the animals for 5 days postoperatively. No complications were seen in animals during the subsequent controls. It was concluded that the surgical techniques employed in this study was advantages to the other techniques in the prevention of wounds resulting from the urinary infiltration to the region.
