Abstract
In the North-East (the rural areas ) of Turkey, ruminants are fed indoor with low quality forages during long winters and this culminates in undernutrition. Urea-molasses licking blocks (UMLB) exist as an alternative supplementation for overcoming this problem as they enhance utilization of the forages by increating the activity of bacteria in the rumen. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of UMLB on antioxidative system. Eight-month- old ram lambs (n = 18) were divided into three equal groups and fed individually ad libitum with either barley straw alone (Group 1) or barley straw plus UMLB (Group 2) and with barley plus UMLB and 100g crushed barley (Group 3). Blood samples were taken on days 1, 15 and 30 of the experiment by jugular venepuncture into tubes containing EDTA. Whole blood was used for the analysis of reducted glutathione (GSH) and plasma was used for the determination of levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), albumine and catalase (CAT). GSH levels decreased in Groups 1 and 2 towards the end of study period but no change occured in Group 3 (p<0.05). MDA levels, however, increased in (p<0.05) Group 1 at the end of experiment but no diffence was observed for the Group 2 and 3. Albumine levels and catalase activity did not differ throughout the experiment. Data suggest that supplemention of straw- fed lambs with UMLB and barley reinforces the activity antioxidative system and this might be due to lack of minerals and vitamins in straw.
