Abstract
This study has been conducted to determine how and how often the primary education and high school students are subjected to violence and harassment by their teachers, as well as the types of violence and harassment. It is a known reality that teachers, who have the responsibility to bring up the youth of the future, resort to violence and harassment toward students from time to time. In this study, a questionnaire consisting of 32 questions relating to violence and harassment was used as a data collection tool. Three items of the questionnaire used in the study consisted of questions aimed at collection of personal data; 15 items of 5-point Likert type questions; six items consisting of questions that could be responded with “yes, no, sometimes”, three items of questions about where, when and what type of violence and harassment they were subjected to, and three items of open ended questions. Data in this study were evaluated using a working model of general survey type, one of the descriptive research methods. Total of 510 students studying at a high school located in Kartal, Istanbul, and at second grade of primary education at a primary school located in Kandira, Kocaeli. The research data were analyzed using the frequency, percentage, average, one-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD test. According to the findings obtained, teachers mostly choose giving low marks, unfair criticism and sending students to school administration as ways of harassment. Types of violence and harassment resorted to by teachers differ depending on male and female students, students’ grades, and whether they are lazy or naughty as well. Students subjected to violence and harassment share this experience mostly with their friends. Violence and harassment are mostly resorted to by older teachers at schools. To prevent violence and harassment towards students at schools, teachers should acquaint themselves with students, listen to them and establish good relations. If necessary, teachers should receive assistance from the guidance service of the school and not bring their personal problems to classrooms.
