Abstract
This study, teachers’ ability to choose the suitable teaching methods and techniques and to arrange educational activities according to the students’ learning styles is discussed In this study, cross-sectional survey and relational survey method is used. Students’ learning styles, teachers genders and their service duration, observed lessons are taken as independent variable, teachers’ teaching ways are taken as dependent variable. The population of the study includes students studying in fifth and sixth grade in the primary schools that are placed in the city center of Malatya in the first term of 2008-2009 academic year and teachers taeching fifth and sixth classes. The sample of the study includes 566 students and 130 teachers selected in population with % 5 sampling mistake and by random cluster sampling method. David Kolb’s “Learning Styles Inventory” and “Teaching Ways Observation Form” are used as an assessment device. As a result of this study, while a significant relation at high level is found between students’ learning stylesand “Settling” and“Changing”teaching ways that teachers impove suitable for learningstyles, partly significant relation is found between students’ learning styles and teachers’ “Assimilating” and “Sorting” teaching wayssuitable for learning styles. “Settling”, “Changing”,“Assimilating” and “Sorting” teaching ways that are practised suitable for learning styles by the teachers show differentiation according to teachers’ gender and their service duration. The differentiation is in favor of the female teachers and teachers having lesser professional experience. Also, the study concluded that, while the conditions of teachers’ application of “Settling”, “Changing” “Sorting” teaching ways suitable for teaching styles show significant difference according to observed lessons, the conditions of teachers application of “Assimilating” teaching ways suitable for teaching styles show no differentiation according to observed lesson.
