Abstract
The ideology of modernity used the "illness" and "body" discourse intensively while describing society. The ideology of modernity indicates the other with illness discourse while defining the normative codes of society. Illness discourse has an important function for the determination of a healthy and approved personal/social body. The anti modern reactions which has risen with modernity has seen a modernity as a negative development and notions related with modernity adressed with illness discourse. In belated modern societies, both of modernity and anti-modern resistance has attempted to define society at the same time. Both ideologies have used the "illness" discourse in differentiated forms and intensively while producing a healthy social body image. This usage of allegory, which was settled in the Ottoman Empire-Turkish Republic modernization process, became more distinct and different in the post-1990 period. In this period, when neo-liberalism and globalization began to influence themselves clearly in everyday life, the discourse of modernization and anti-modern rhetoric were also heavily resorted to illness discourse. This study examines illness representations and patterns of usage in post-1990 Turkish cinema. Films selected from the Turkish cinema universe after 1990 are examined with their historical context and the ideological function of illness in the naration. The ideological function of illness in narration is examined in the study. As a result of the study, it is revealed that the representations of illness in Turkish cinema are used intensively and functional by the ideological perspective.
