Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To study the relationships between some trace element(copper, zinc, magnesium and selenium) levels and fetal growth STUDY DESIGN :Seventy healthy women with term pregnancies were included in the study. Cases were divided into 3 subgroups according to their birthweights: .Small for gestational age(n=15), appropiate for gestational age(n=40), large for gestational age(n=15). Copper, zinc, magnesium and selenium levels were studied in amniotic fluid, maternal and fetal cord blööd samples by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The differences among the subgroups were investigated. RESULTS: Significantly lower maternal and fetal copper levels were observed in large for gestational age as compared to small for gestational age and appropiate for gestational age groups(p<0.05). Amniotic fluid zinc levels decreased significantly in small for gestational age compared to appropiate for gestational age and large for gestational age groups(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Copper and zinc levels may play a role in the fetal growth. Further studies with larger series are needed to clarify this subject.
