Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) have many applications in evaluation of the uterus. TVU is particularly accurate in the evaluation of myometrial and endometrial disorders. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic capability of transvaginal ultrasound in detecting diffuse adenomyosis. STUDY DESIGN: Ninety-five women, mean age 48.7 years (38-60), were studied by TVU before hysterectomy for benign uterine pathology. The Sonographer diagnosed adenomyosis in twenty- five patients, whereas the pathologist diagnosed adenomyosis in eightteen making ex novo diagnoses in two cases. RESULTS: The sensitivity of TVU was 88.8%, the specificity 88.3%, the positive predictive value 64%, and the negative predictive value 97.1%. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that TVU is an important and advanced tool in diagnosis of diffuse adenomyosis.
