Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of ornidazole to treat bacterial vaginosis. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and forty eight women with a diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis were randomly chosen to be administered one of the following treatment regimens: Oral metronidazole 2x500 mg for 7 days, oral metronidazole 2 gr in a single-dose, oral ornidazole 2x500 mg for 7 days, ornidazole vaginal pessary 1x500 mg for 3 days. Following post-treatment examination, results were evaluated by one-way ANOVA using Tukey's post hoc correction. RESULTS: Cure rates for 7-day oral metronidazole, single-dose oral metronidazole, 7-day oral ornidazole, and 3-day vaginal ornidazole were 100%, 81%, 91%, and 100%, respectively, with no statistical significance between the cure rates of the regimens. Adverse effects were 17%, 13%, 4.6%, and 0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Oral or vaginal ornidazole can be an alternative to metronidazole in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis.
