Abstract
OBJECTIVE : To compare between normotensive and hypertensive patients with abruptio placentae in perinatal fetal morbidity and mortality. STUDY DESIGN : All women experiencing abruptio placentae except multiple pregnancies and those delivered before 20 weeks' gestation were included in this retrospective study. Subjects were divided into normal and hypertensive groups. Comparisons were made between the groups in perinatal fetal morbidity and mortality criteria. RESULTS : Neonates from the hypertensive patients had significantly (P< 0.05) lower mean Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes, and also an increased perinatal fetal mortality rate compared to those from normotensive subjects. The groups were not significantly different (P> 0.05) in demographic characteristics, fetal gender, gestational age, birth weight, and delivery route. CONCLUSION : The.study results suggest that maternal hypertensive disorders in patients with abruptio placentae may be a risk factor worsening the perinatal fetal prognosis.
