Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to document the level of contraceptive use, method choice of women and the effect of women characteristics on their contraceptive use in a developing country. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of 1672 married women applying to a family planning unit in an urban area of Turkey was conducted. The contraceptive method that women were currently using, their age, educational level and number of living children were asked. We have analysed the relationship between the women characteristics such as age, education and number of living children and their contraceptive preferences. RESULTS: The majority of the women (71.6%) were using a modern contraceptive method. The intrauterine device (IUD) was the most preferred method (53.3%). Contraceptive method use peak in the 35 - 39 age group (96.9%). In every age groups IUD was the most popular method. Interestingly, we couldn't find any relation between the educational level of the women and their contraceptive behaviour (p>0.05). There was a positive correlation between number of living children of women and their contraceptive use (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Increasing the knowledge of women about modern contraceptive methods appears to be the most effective means of advancing family planning services in developing countries such as Turkey.
