Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new technique named infracoccygeal sacropexy reported by Petros in the surgical treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. STUDY DESIGN: 5 patients underwent infracoccygeal sacropexy between October 2002-January 2003. The patients were reevaluated 6 months after the operation. SPSS was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients were 59±7. All were postmenopausal. Two cases had grade 2 and three cases had grade 3 vaginal vault prolapse according to the Beecham classification. 4 patients had undergone abdominal hysterectomy and 1 patient had undergone vaginal hysterectomy. Coexisting symptoms were urgency in 2 cases and nocturia in 3 cases. The mean operation time was 62±7 minutes and the mean bleeding amount was 200±20 cc. Mean hospitalization time for all cases was 4±1 days. The patients were reevaluated six months after the operation. It was noted that pelvic relaxation, urgency, nocturia and pelvic pain symptoms have all cured. Postoperative satisfaction was remarkably good in all patients. There was no complication during and after the operations. CONCLUSION: Infracoccygeal sacropexy (posterior intravaginal sacropexy -IVS-) is an efficient and safe operation in the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse.
