Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed the detection of circumcision related behaviors and knowledge levels of those mothers having a son of 0-12 years old. Methods: The sampling of this descriptive investigation was constituted by the 98 mothers from a universe of 290 mothers, who accepted to participate in the study, had a son of 0-12 years of age, and registered at Doğanlar Health Clinic Region. The data were collected by face-to-face interview techniques and with the help of a questionnaire form composed of 3 parts. Results: It was detected that mothers were predominantly at the age group of 25-34 years, literate, or primary school graduate. The rate of mothers who had his child circumcised at the period when her child was at the 3-6 years of age and that, not appropriate for a circumcision was 36.7%. The majority of mothers having their son circumcised had this operation at home and by a doctor. It was also detected that level of education had a positive effect on the choice of the appropriate age for circumcision, the reasons for circumcision, and the persons that will implement the circumcision (p<0.05). Conclusion: Among the reasons for mothers to have their sons circumcised are primarily the religious reasons as a result of being a member of a Muslim society. It is seen that mothers have a general knowledge on the medical benefits, contraindications, and complications of circumcision. However, mothers were determined to have insufficient information on the problems resulting from the circumcision done at inappropriate ages. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the knowledge level of society related to the circumcision and to make the society comprehend the importance of circumcision in reproductive medicine.
