Abstract
Objective: To analyse the effectiveness of a resuscitation training course done by fifth year medical students during their allocation to the Department of Anaesthesia. Methods: A Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training program was applied to 165 medical students divided into subgroups, each containing 5-6 persons, for five days according to the advisory statements of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), between September 1998-June 1999. On the first day of anaesthesia training, a written exam and a skill test were carried out, then the course continued with a lecture, video show and training on the mannequin. The written exam and skill test were repeated at the end of the course. Results: The results of pre and post-training scores were compared according to their success evaluated out of a total of 100 points. The results before starting the course showed that the average point of the students was 6.6 ± 5.7 for the written exam and 31.9 ± 14.6 for the skill test. After they were involved in the CPR training program, these points increased to 53.8 ±11.2 (p<0.01) and 95.2 ± 4.7 (p<0.01), respectively. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the traditional program of CPR must be supported by intensive practice on the mannequin and must be adapted according to recent concepts.
