Abstract
The aim of our study is to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis B, C and E viruses (HBV, HCV, HEV) among the dustmen in Izmir-Turkey. The serum samples of 879 dustmen were studied for HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc total, anti-HCV and serum samples of 276 were studied for anti-HEV IgM and IgG by using Access Macro ELISA (Beckman Coulter) technique. HBsAg positivity was 7.5% (66/879), anti-HCV positivity was 1.1% (10/879) and anti-HBc total positivity was 54.5% (479/879). Anti-HEV IgM and IgG were both positive in two workers, anti-HEV IgM was positive in two workers and anti-HEV IgG was positive in 25 (9.0%) workers out of 276. Totally, 54.5% of workers were found to be infected with HBV and 10.5% were found to be infected with HEV. According to these results, HBV, HCV and HEV seropositivity rates in dustmen were statistically higher than the seropositivity among normal population and blood donors in our city.
