Abstract
In the folk songs of a certain society it is possible to find certain social phenomena and facts related to cultural history as reflections of daily life. Turkish folk songs also represent almost all aspects of Turkish folk life. While examining the repertoire of Turkish folk songs, one of the noteworthy characteristics to be noticed is that a group of songs have thematic structures related to mill or miller motifs. This phenomenon, which is present in Anatolia and the Balkans and probably in Central Asia and the whole Turkic world too, reflects cultural history and social reality. In folk songs, we can see elements related to the mill and the miller in two different ways: firstly, the mill motif in some songs is generally is used at the beginning of each stanza and this usage constitutes certain fixed patterns and expressions. There are many examples of this first kind, and it is not always necessary that these patterns are directly related to the theme of the song. The second group contains songs with miller motifs, and the main focus of this essay is on this group. Assuming a close and meaningful thematic relation between the songs in the second group, the study will examine these relations and the reasons behind the songs with a mill motif. The study will also emphasize the short history of the mill and the place of the mill in Turkish cultural history
