Abstract
The volume of Turkey’s foreign trade has scored fundamental developments in recent years. Foreign trade deficit, however, has also increased as a result of this development. This situation brought to the fore the question of whether foreign trade is affected by exchange rates. While increasing the value of currency is promoting imports by making foreign goods cheaper, it, at the same time, can increase the exporting potential of the sectors based largely on imported inputs. In this study, the sensitivity of foreign trade deficit to changes in exchange rate is analyzed. In the study, the relationship between exchange rates and exports and imports in the Turkish economy is analyzed by using exchange rates and ex- port and imports series for the 1989:Q1-2012:Q4 period. The findings prove that there is a bidirectional relationship between exchange rates and exports and im- ports. Additionally, a conclusion that an increase in exchange rates causes an ncrease in exports and a decrease in imports is reached. Despite the rapid inc- rease in Turkey’s imports is related to higher demands in the domestic market, the increase in exports is related to the increase in the number of foreign markets and economic development in these markets.
