Abstract
The study was carried out on 237 sheep in Diyarbakır province outside the breeding season in order to investigate the relationship between the amount of cervical mucus (CM) and pregnancy in Awassi sheep. For oestrus synchronization, a sponge containing progesterone (20 mg fluorogestene acetate, Chronogest, Intervet) was administered intravaginally to all sheep for the 12th day. Two days before sponge removal PGF2α (1 ml, im, Estrumate, Intervet) and 600 IU PMSG (im, Chronogest, Intervet) were applied on the day the sponge was removed. Just before the artificial insemination (AI), ewes were classified according to the amount of cervical mucus (CM) in the vagina as “absent” (n= 25), “little” (n= 79) or “abundant” (n= 133). Ewes were inseminated intra cervically 12-18 hours after estrus with fresh diluted semen at a dose of 200×106 motile spermatozoa. Pregnancy rates were determined by ultrasound 30-40 days after AI. Pregnancy rates of ewes classified as having absent, little and abundant cervical mucus were 36.4%, 50.6% and 45.1%, respectively (p>0.05). It has been concluded from the study that the amount of CM in the vagina prior to AI did not significantly affect the pregnancy rates in the Awassi sheep. However, remarkable numerical difference between the pregnancy rates of sheep classified as “absent” and “little” according to the amount of SM indicates that the amount of SM may have the potential to affect fertility. Therefore, new studies are needed including more ewes.
