Özet

1863-4 yıllarında Ankara Aziz Yorgi Kilisesi’nin müdavimleri, Rum Ortodoks Cemaati’nin ileri gelenlerini ve işleyişini sert biçimde eleştiren, müellifi bilinmeyen manifesto benzeri üç mektup bulur. Mektupları bırakmakla suçlanan bir Rum, metropolit ve cemaat ileri gelenlerinin talebiyle Ankara Valisi’nce cezalandırılır. Olaya müdahil olan Protestan Vekili cezaya itiraz eder. Bu olaydan yola çıkan bu yazı, Türkiye’deki Protestanlığa ihtidayı daha iyi anlamak amacıyla, Protestan muhtedilerin ortaya çıkışında, kişisel ihtilafların ve kadim cemaatlerin yönetiminden duyulan hoşnutsuzluğun payını değerlendiriyor.

Abstract

: In 1863-64 Greek Orthodox frequenters of St. Georgios Church of Ankara discovered inside three letters of manifesto from an unknown author, who had harshly criticized the malfunctioning of the Community and its leaders. A suspect of Greek origin was sentenced to exile and penal servitude by the Prefect under the influence of the Metropolitan and Community leaders. The Protestant Deputy in Istanbul was involved in the affair and objected to the penalty. This article examines this event for a better understanding of Protestant conversion in Turkey and tries to evaluate the share of personal conflicts and of discontent with the administration of ancient communities in the emergence of Protestant dissidence.
