There are a number of mechanisms that provide the basis for the formation of trust and cooperation bonds among the individuals in the society and ensure its conti- nuity. These mechanisms are discussed under the title of social capital. The tradition of musahiplik which is among the basic institutions in the Alevism system is also shaped on the basis of trust, cooperation and volunteerism. In this study, the components and struc- ture of social capital phenomenon have firstly been analyzed. Then, the tradition of mu- sahiplik has been examined in terms of content and form. Based on these analysis, what the overlapping and the differing aspects of the musahiplik bond are with the concept of social capital have been discussed. The conclusion consequently reached is like this: in the world which is rapidly urbanized and where the diversities are considered with suspi- cion, each bond that strenghtens the sense of trust among the individuals is precious and should be supported.
