Abstract
An outbreak of pharyngitis caused by group G streptococci had occured among the hospital personnel in Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Hospital in January 2004. This outbreak and increased frequency in occurence of various infections caused by group G streptococci aroused the thought of investigation of group G streptococcal carriage in a section of normal population. For representation of normal population, 369 patients admitted for cardiovascular and urologic operations were included in the study and throat cultures of them were evaluated. Of the 369 throat cultures, 353 (96 %) yielded normal flora and 16 (4 %) yielded beta-haemolytic streptococci (BHS). Nine of 16 BHS strains were grouped by Streptococcus Grouping Latex Reagent (Oxoid ) as group A, 2 as group B, 1 as group C and 4 as group G. The carriage rate of group G streptococci was found to be 1 % in 369 patients. Our study population consisted mostly of middle and old age of patients who were candidates for cardiovascular surgery. Further studies are needed covering all age groups to get more appropriate information about this subject.
