Abstract
Listening is one of the four main skills of language. This skill is also one of the cornerstones in the process of teaching-learning as well as social life of an individual. The purpose of this study was to determine the awareness levels of 6th grade students concerning this main skill. The data were collected by using a Likert-type "Survey on Awareness of Listening Skill" developed by ùahin and Aydın (2009) and consisting of 46 items. The population of the study consisted of 268 students studying in the 6th grade at 3 secondary schools randomly selected from the city center of Kars. In the light of the data obtained, it was found that the 6thgrade students had a good level of awareness for the listening skills. Besides, it was concluded that their awareness levels of the listening skill showed a significant difference in terms of socio-economic level. It was also revealed that their awareness of the listening skill did not show a significant difference in terms of age and gender variables.
