Abstract

Liquefaction is an upward movement of saturated soils to the surface like a viscose liquid due to cyclic stresses generated by the earthquakes. Relative movement of the ground also occurs due to faulting, and therefore, the structures sustain damages due to faulting and liquefaction. In this study, the differences at the position around Sapanca Lake vicinity, south coasts of İzmit Bay and Sakarya city center because of the liquefaction and faulting were determined using the aerial photographs taken before and after 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. And in the researches based on the data derived from the aerial photographs taken in different dates, direction and magnitude of the ground displacement due to faulting and liquefaction were determined. When the results are investigated, it can be seen that sensitive results can be achieved if sufficient number of observations on the photographs are carried out, and the method utilized in this study provides correct results, which represent the whole area investigated.
