Abstract

Besides the satellites CHAMP and GRACE which at the moment play an active role in the determination of the gravity field of the earth and its variation in time, the satellite GOCE (The Gravity Field and Steady - State Ocean Circulation Explorer) still to be constructed is aimed to be brought to the orbit latest 2006. GOCE is based on the principle of Gradiometry or differential accelerometry and hence will determine the medium and short wave-length part of the gravity field. Therefore it will be regarded as complementary to CHAMP and GRACE. In this work the mechanical fundamentals of satellite gradiometry are worked out and the mission goals of the satellite GOCE combining the concept of the satellite gradiometry with the principle of satellite-to-satellite tracking (SST) in high-low mode are explained.
