Abstract

The image of nursing has always been a long-standing topic of discussion having many suggestions for solutions. Nurses and the public have views on a number of long-held stereotypes of nurses and the nursing profession which continue today. In past times, nurses have been seen as white angels, sexy women, doctor’s assistants, and the doctor’s right arm. One of the most popular magazines in our country, "Hayat Dergisi", towards the end of the 1950s, the company E. R. Squibb and Sons published advertisements which were describing the importance of the nursing profession and calling women to be a nurse. These advertisements emphasized the importance of the role of nurses in protection and treatment services, and contained the slogan “The nurse is the doctor’s right arm”. A right arm is important, but it still only means being an assistant. : Despite the advances in the field of nursing in this country, studies carried out in recent years have shown that perceptions of the nursing profession as “doctors’ assistants” or “the doctor’s right arm” still persist. As a result of these stereotypes, not only members of the profession but also the profession itself is negatively affected on many levels. It is discussed in this article how these advertisements which was published in 1950’s reflected on the image of the nursing profession.
