Abstract

Fifty-two Origanum spp. samples were collected from 12 provinces of Aegean and West Mediterranean region in Turkey. The samples of ten species (O. sipyleum L, 0. onites L, O. majorana L., 0. vulgare L, O. saccatum P.H.Davis, O.solymicum P.H.Davis, O. syriacum L, O. hypericifoliutn O.Schwarz&P.H.Davis, O. laevigatum Boiss, and 0. bilgeri P.H.Davis) and two hybrids (O.sipyleumxO. vulgare spp. hirtum, O.onitesxO.vulgare spp. hirtum) were investigated according to their 40 characters. The chromosome numbers ofO. vulgare, O.sipyleum and O. onites were found as 2n—30. The samples could not be distinguished by their cytological characters. The Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was applied by . using morphological and anatomical characters. As a result ofPCA analysis, according to 1 and 2, and 1 and 3rd PCA 's the Anatolicon section formed a distinct group from the main group which consist of other sections and hybrids.
