Abstract

The ideal urban designs of the 19th century were utopian socialists’ thoughts and practices, and they have been formed by ideological approaches of utopian socialist tradition. But the origins of the 20th century urban designs were not ideological approaches. The urban designs of the 20th century tried to respond the necessities of social life, therefore they were pragmatic approaches. The city designs of Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier and Robert Owen who were utopian socialists, aimed to reduce social, economic and spatial depravations of the Industrial Revolution. Idealistic urban designs of the 19th century might be characterized as ideological approaches. Urban utopias of the 20th century, such as Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City and Le Corbusier’s idealistic urban designs were pragmatic approaches that have been put forward to respond economic, social and spatial necessities of that period. For this reason, idealistic urban designs of the 19th century include ideological approaches, and can be seen as an attempt to realize the concepts such as equality, freedom and justice.
